Collection: “Nature (De)Constructed”

Gallery Jupiter is kicking off their exhibition season with a new show featuring works by artists Deb Jellenik and Beth Sillen. Both artists create works on or of paper to produce diverse representations of the natural world.

Ms. Jellenik starts her process by collecting images of flowers, shells, leaves, branches, and other natural elements. She then digitally edits them to achieve a more graphic appearance. When she’s happy with the composition, she prints them on hand-painted, leafed paper or plain paper. Then sheadds other media, such as paint, print, metal, or wax, on top. This layering creates texture that highlights her subjects and celebrates the beauty of the natural world. “I am fascinated by how the process of combining materials with my photos adds depth, creates tension, and changes the feel of the work” says Ms. Jellenik.

Ms. Sillen’s work features landscape-inspired torn paper arrangements. It explores themes of abstraction, space, light, color, texture, and improvisation. She gathers paper from discarded mail, books, and magazines. Her process begins with painting the papers and then exploring color through cutting and manipulation, evolving through intuition and experimentation. “I have always sought wonders in everyday life and nature; remaining open, accepting, and recognizing potential in objects (and people) that others might overlook,” says Ms. Sillen.
